According to the United Nations, during Ban Ki-moon's Saturday visit to Mali, the UN Secretary General and President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita agreed on "the importance of remaining vigilant to the ongoing threat of Ebola in the region and of continuing to strengthen national systems' preparedness".
Ban Ki-moon also "stressed that it was never too early to start planning for post-Ebola recovery, with the support of the UN" and made "a renewed call for action, focusing on social mobilization and community engagement" after he met with Guinean President Alpha Conde Saturday.
The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa started in Guinea at the end of last year and later spread to the neighboring countries. Some Ebola cases have been reported outside of West Africa, including in the United States.
On Saturday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the death toll from the Ebola outbreak has reached 7,373.
Ebola is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. There is no officially-approved cure for the virus, but several countries have been working on developing Ebola vaccines.
