El Salvador emergency services are urging residents living on the Pacific Coast of the country to flee to higher ground amid a tsunami warning issued after a powerful earthquake that hit 153 kilometers off the coast.

​According to seismologists, the epicenter of the earthquake is 120 kilometers off the settlement of Puerta El Triunfo. The tremblor occured at the depth of 33 kilometers.

US Geological Survey reported of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake striking 153 kilometers off El Salvador coast. No damages have been reported. The initial data on the strength of the quake was later revised down to 7.0-magnitude.

Reuters reports that the tremors were also reported in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Nicaraguan officials said that the quake occurred an hour after powerdul hurricane Otto had made landfall in the Caribbean nation, AFP reported.

According to the US-based Pacific tsunami warning center, "destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii."

However, the authorities in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico have issued national tsunami alerts.
