Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev called the shooting in Almaty an act of terrorism.

"Today in Almaty a terrorist act took place, which, unfortunately, once again led to casualties. I express my condolences to the relatives of the victims, they should be provided with psychological and financial support."

The president also called on citizens to resist "information provocations" after the deadly shooting. He ordered to ensure security in public places after the attack.

"It is important to strictly prevent rumors spreading panic and identify provocateurs. The residents of Almaty and the entire country should be sure that the most decisive measures are taken to restore order."

Earlier on Monday, the highest level of a terror alert has been declared in Almaty following an armed attack on police officers Monday, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

At least two gunmen engaged in a shootout with Almaty law enfocement earlier in the day with the death toll standing at five killed and seven in critical condition. Both suspects were later detained.

Initial reports suggested three officers and one civilian dead and eight people more wounded.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev ordered his interior minister to visit the southern city of Almaty following a deadly shooting.
