MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Candidate for UK Conservative Leadership Liam Fox called on Monday for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union by January 1, 2019.
"I would like to see us leaving the European Union on the 1st of January, 2019, well ahead of the election period that will follow. That means that we will have to activate the article 50 process before the end of this year," Fox said.
Former UK Defense Secretary Liam Fox announced his bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party last week, as the Tories are preparing to vote on a new prime minister by October to replace David Cameron.
Cameron announced his resignation on June 24, a day after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.
