ROME (Sputnik) – Berlusconi was hospitalized with a heart condition last week. His doctor said that he would undergo an operation to replace his aortic valve. The surgery took place in Milan.

"The surgery was successful, without complications and lasted for stipulated time. Now the patient is in the intensive care department and we are waiting when he will awake. Everything lasted for about four hours and we will report about the final results at the press conference tomorrow," Alfieri told reporters.

Berlusconi, 79, was the Italian prime minister three times, occupying the post in 1994-1995, 2001-2006 and 2008-2011.
