MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Clashes broke out in Baghdad's Green Zone which is heavily protected by Iraqi enforcement units, Al Jazeera reported.
According to the broadcaster, demonstrators broke into the headquarters of the prime minister, reportedly prompting Iraqi authorities to announce a curfew in Baghdad.
The authorities raised the security alert to tackle the violence in the Green Zone and ordered security officers to cut their vacations, Sky News Arabia reported.
Last month, demonstrators assaulted the Iraqi Parliament's building demanding large-scale reforms and protesting against corruption. The protests are being reportedly led by Shia Cleric Muqtada Sadr with the goal of replacing cabinet ministers in the government of Prime Minister Haider Abadi with technocrats.
