WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) considers the possibility of the United Kingdom (UK) terminating its membership in the European Union (EU) bloc as a significant risk to the global economic growth, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a press conference on Thursday.
"We have clearly elevated Brexit as one of the serious downside risks on the horizon of global growth," Lagarde stated. "We believe that the risk of exit of the United Kingdom is a serious concern."
UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 European Union member states reached a deal in February to grant Great Britain a special status within the bloc.
