MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moscow and Tehran must be involved in any political and diplomatic efforts of international powers to settle the ongoing civil war in Syria, US Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said.
"The Russians and the Iranians are the two biggest supporters of the Assad regime, so they have to be part of any kind of ongoing political diplomatic effort," Clinton said during a meeting with voters, broadcast by CNN.
Clinton expressed hope that the Russian-US agreement on cessation of hostilities between Damascus and the Syrian opposition would have been implemented by the upcoming weekend.
On Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced a ceasefire deal between the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the armed opposition factions had been reached. The agreement will come into force on February 27.
