BAGHDAD (Sputnik) — Iraqi army fully liberated Tal Kasiba area in the east of Tikrit city from the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh in Arabic) militants, Iraqi Salah Ad-Din provincial Governor Raed Juburi told Sputnik.

"Security forces and national militia have managed to completely liberate Tal Kasiba and defeat terrorists," Juburi said.

The governor added that during clashes with Iraqi security forces, Daesh militants had big losses. Iraqi army killed dozens of militants, including foreign mercenaries and destroyed technical equipment.

According to Juburi, local police forces, militia and the province's operation command played a significant role in Daesh defeat.

Since 2014, vast territories in Iraq and neighbouring Syria have been occupied by Daesh, which has proclaimed a caliphate on the land under its control. The terrorist group, outlawed in many countries including Russia, has carried out numerous terror attacks and committed many human rights atrocities in the country.

Iraq's military and the US-led international coalition are conducting an offensive against Daesh forces in Iraq, having almost liberated the Iraqi city of Ramadi, located in the northwestern Iraqi province of Anbar.
