TOKYO (Sputnik) – Fallon met with Nakatani in Tokyo on Saturday, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in view of Pyongyang’s nuclear activity.
Nakatani told journalists after the meeting that a basis for joint Japan-UK action has been set and that both countries agree that North Korea’s actions threaten stability in the Pacific.
On Friday, after a meeting of Japanese and British foreign and defense ministers, the two countries also said they would strengthen defense cooperation in the wake of North Korea’s nuclear test and could hold more joint military exercises.
On Wednesday, Pyongyang announced through state-run media that it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.
The international community condemned the alleged hydrogen bomb test as provocative and undermining stability in the region and threatened to enforce more sanctions against North Korea.
North Korea withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2003 and conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.
The United States, Japan and South Korea, as well as Russia and China, took part in talks with North Korea on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula between 2003 and 2009, when Pyongyang withdrew from the talks.
