Israel's Attorney General Ordered to Explain Failure to Probe Info Leak
Israel's Supreme Court has ordered the country's Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to submit explanations over his failure to investigate leaking allegations against former Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, the Haaretz newspaper reports.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Menachem Mazuz gave Weinstein one month to prepare an initial response on his failure to investigate the activities of Barak, who allegedly gave confidential information to his biographers, according to Haaretz.
22 September 2015, 18:10 GMT
Senior police officials and the attorney general had considered launching a probe into Barak's confidential information leaking in August. The investigation was not pursued due to Weinstein's concerns over possible freedom of speech infringement such a procedure could cause, Haaretz said on Thursday.
17 November 2015, 12:31 GMT
In August, Weinstein was handed a petition requesting him and the head of the police investigations branch to launch the probe, which he failed to do within fourth months, thus prompting the petitioners to take the matter to court.
The Israeli penal code's article 117 prohibits public officials from passing information obtained on a government job to third parties without prior authorization.
Ehud Barak served as Israel's defense minister between 2007 and 2013, and also served as prime minister between 1999 and 2001.
