LONDON (Sputnik) — Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom Alexander Yakovenko called on London to join efforts with Russia to counter the Islamic State militant group.
"Russia and Britain should beat Isil [IS] as we did the Nazis: together," Yakovenko said in his column published by The Telegraph on Friday.
On Thursday, British Prime Minister David Cameron called on parliamentarians to support UK air campaign against ISIL in Syria. A vote on his proposal is likely to be held as early as next week.
According to Yakovenko, Russia and other countries would welcome the British bit to defeat ISIL.
Russia and the US-led coalition, including the United Kingdom, have been conducting separate air campaigns in war-torn Syria against ISIL that controls large areas of the country and the neighboring Iraq.
