WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama will meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the first time on November 19, White House National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said in a briefing on Thursday.

"He [Obama] will have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada," Rhodes stated. "This is the first opportunity for the president to meet face-to-face with the prime minister of Canada."

The first meeting of the two leaders will take place following a decision by Obama to ban construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline that was proposed by the energy giant TransCanada.

Trudeau has previously stated Canada has been disappointed by Obama’s decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline proposal, but respected the US right to do so.

On November 6, Obama said the United States would reach out to Canadian counterparts to deepen cooperation on energy issues and climate change.
