RIGA (Sputnik) — The aim of the border zone is to maintain security on the European Union's outer boundary and prevent the smuggling of goods and human trafficking, Poznaka said.
"The execution of the work will depend on available funding, it is planned to be fully completed by 2019," she said.
The border zone is expected to be created along the entire length of the 276-kilometer (172-mile) border, while fences are planned only in areas at high risk of trespassing, according to Poznaka.
In late August, Estonia announced that it would spend about $80 million to build a 67 mile-long wall on its border with Russia.
