A huge blast in central Bangkok that left at least 27 people dead and over a hundred injured on Monday was the first terrorist act of such a scale in the city’s downtown area, frequently visited by foreigners, said Evgeny Belenkiy, the head of Rossiya Segodnya’s office in Thailand.

"In my over 20 years of experience working out of Bangkok, this is the first time a terrorist act of this magnitude has happened in the city's downtown area, where there are so many locals and foreign tourists," Belenkiy told Radio Sputnik in an interview in the aftermath of the explosion.

Belenkiy added that the terrorist act wasn't intended to be a political statement, but aimed to hurt as many people as possible.

At this point, a police investigation is underway. Nobody knows yet who was behind the bloody terrorist act that left scores of people dead.

Huge Explosion Hits Central Bangkok, Casualties Reported
The explosion was caused by a bomb. In the immediate aftermath of the huge explosion, victims' body parts were scattered all around the street.

Two more bombs were found in close proximity to the area of explosion, but a bomb squad defused them.

Thailand's Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwong said that the terrorist attack had been aimed at foreigners to damage the country's tourism.

All 438 schools under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will be closed on Tuesday due to security concerns, the government said.
