MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the WSJ, the figure includes 28 percent who said US troops should stay in Iraq for “as long as it takes to get the job done” on top of 32 percent who believe US troops should only be deployed in Iraq for a short period to allow the Iraqi Army to regain control of the situation.
The attitude toward the move is divided by party lines, with 80 percent of republicans and only 47 percent of democrats supporting the deployment of US troops in Iraq in any form.
The Islamic State is a militant group that took over large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014. To curb the group’s advance, a US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL targets in both countries since 2014. On the ground, IS fighters are being opposed by Iraqi forces and Kurdish militia.
Earlier in June, US President Barack Obama approved sending 450 military personnel to advise and train Iraqi forces in addition to the some 3,000 US troops already stationed there.
