MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the conversation, Kerry congratulated Lavrov with the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, stressing the huge contribution of Russian people and other nations of the former Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

"The minister and the Secretary [of State John Kerry] agreed to hold a meeting to discuss possible Russian and US joint steps to cooperate in resolving various conflict situations, as well as to consider the state of bilateral relations, in the nearest time," the statement read.

The relations between Russia and the United States deteriorated dramatically in 2014 over the Ukrainian internal crisis.
