Syrian Death Toll Rises to Over 210,000

Syrian military conflict has claimed lives of 210,060 people since its beginning in 2011, including 10,664 children and 6,783 women, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — The Syrian military conflict has claimed lives of 210,060 people since its beginning in 2011, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Saturday.

The British-based monitoring group also stated that among the total number of those killed in the Syrian civil war, there are 10,664 children and 6,783 women.

According to the Observatory's toll, 35,827 Syrian rebels and 45,385 soldiers of Bashar Assad's army were killed during the armed conflict. The human rights monitor noted, however, that the actual death count could be significantly higher and stand at over 85,000, as both sides to the conflict are trying to conceal the real toll. The fate of thousands of detainees remains unknown as well.

The Observatory urged the UN Security Council to "immediately intervene to stop the systematic killing in cold blood against the sons of the Syrian people."

The ongoing Syrian civil war, or the Syrian revolution, erupted in March 2011 amid the so-called Arab Spring protests across the Middle East countries.

The military standoff between the army of the country's president Assad and anti-government groups, including Islamic State, made millions flee their homes.

The Islamic State (IS) militants have been fighting on the territory of Syria since 2012 and managed to seize a large number of areas.
