The Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine was well known for lampooning Islam as well as other religions, which might well have been the motive for the attack.

The gunmen managed to flee from the scene of the tragedy, prompting a manhunt launched by French police.

Police identified three suspects - Said Kouachi (born in 1980), his brother Cherif (born in 1982) and Hamyd Mourad (born in 1996). The latter had already turned himself in, claiming that he has an alibi.

Seven people were arrested by police on suspicion of involvement in the attack, according to France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

The attack was condemned by representatives of international organizations and high-ranking government officials from all over the world.
