UN Security Council have condemned a recent terrorist attack on the Embassy of Israel in Athens.

UNITED NATIONS, December 14 (Sputnik) – Members of the Security Council have condemned a recent terrorist attack on the Embassy of Israel in Athens, praising the launch of an investigation into the incident by the Greek government.

"Council members commended the response to the incident by the Government of Greece, including its unequivocal condemnation and immediate commencement of an investigation," the UN Security Council said in a statement Saturday, adding that it was also condemning "in the strongest terms" the December 12 Athens attack "involving dozens of shots fire at the [Israeli] Embassy building".

According to the statement, members of the Security Council also reaffirmed that terrorism "in all its forms and manifestations" is "one of the most serious threats to peace and security".

On Friday, four men on two motorcycles opened fire as they drove past the Israeli Embassy in the Psychiko district of Athens. Police said that 54 bullet casings matching those manufactured by Kalashnikov were found at the scene.

Greek media reported citing police sources that the far-left Popular Fighters Group, also known as the Group of Popular Rebels was likely responsible for the attack.

The group claimed responsibility for a similar attack that happened in December, 2013, also in Athens, when some 60 shots from Kalashnikov rifles were fired by men driving past the German Consulate on motorcycles.

The Greek Foreign Ministry announced Friday that police fighting terrorism were being mobilized to find those responsible for the attack and stressed that the incident will not have an impact on Greece's cooperation with Israel.
