BUENOS-AIRES, February 5 (RIA Novosti) - A build-up of gas caused the fatal explosion last week in a Mexican skyscraper complex housing the headquarters of the country’s oil monopoly Pemex, local media reported citing Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam.
Last Thursday’s explosion in the basement of an auxiliary building of the skyscraper complex in Mexico City injured over 120 people, while the death toll climbed to 37 after a woman died of her injuries in hospital on Monday.
“The blast in the administrative building of Pemex was caused by accumulated gas in the basement,” Karam said, citing the results of an investigation, adding no traces of explosive devices were discovered in the building.
Mexican President Pena Nieto visited the hospital on Friday where the injured were being treated, and ordered Pemex to provide support to the families of those killed and injured.
A three-day period of nationwide mourning was declared in Mexico following the blast.
