Italy’s men’s fencing team scraped a gold medal in the foil Sunday, beat Japan in a close final.

The Italian squad of Andrea Baldini, Giorgio Avola and Andrea Cassara won 41-38 against Japan’s Ryo Miyaki, Yuki Ota, Kenta Chida and Suguru Awaji.

Japan led after the first two bouts, but Cassara’s 8-4 thrashing of Chida in the third proved crucial as the Italians took a lead they never surrendered.

Germany’s fencers beat the United States convincingly to win bronze.

The Germany team of Peter Joppich, Sebastian Bachmann, Benjamin Kleibrink and Andre Wessels ran out 45-27 winners against the U.S. team of Race Imboden, Alexander Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt.
