The setting up of polling stations for Russian presidential elections in Moldova’s breakaway Transdnestr region is an unfriendly move, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

A total of 24 polling stations will be open on Sunday, Russian presidential election day, in the unrecognized Transdnestr republic.

The ministry said there were no impediments to polling stations in parts of the country controlled by the Moldovan authorities but that the government was against such stations being opened in areas “beyond the control of the constitutional authorities.”

The Russian move is “deplorable” and “unfriendly,” arousing concern about the future of Moldova’s relations with Russia, the ministry said.
