Russia's state-controlled gas export giant Gazprom cut prices for gas supplies to Greece’s DEPA company some six months ago, the deputy head of Gazprom's export arm said on Tuesday.

"We…took certain steps aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Russian gas to the Greek market...But, I would not dare say that gas supplied to Greece is cheap," deputy head Sergey Chelpanov said during a conference call.

In 2010, Gazprom supplied 2.1 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Greece.

Gazprom is currently embroiled in a row with its German partners RWE and E.ON over long-term gas supply prices, because of a gap between high buying prices from Gazprom and falling prices obtained in the oversupplied European spot markets that E.ON and RWE serve.

Both firms have said that they have started arbitration proceedings in this matter, but Gazprom has made clear it is determined to defend its long-term supply prices.
