Iranian diplomat Farzad Farhangian has resigned from his post in Brussels in a sign of protest against his government's policies and is seeking political asylum in Norway, Iranian opposition websites said on Tuesday.

Farhangian, who was an adviser on media issues in the Iranian Embassy in Brussels, had been working as a diplomat for 23 years, the Balatarin website said.

His resignation followed that of Hossein Alizadeh, a senior official at Iran's Embassy in Finland. Alizadeh resigned last week to protest against the persecution of dissidents in Iran following the 2009 presidential elections, saying he would ask Finland for asylum.

In February, Norway granted asylum to Mohammad-Reza Heydari, who had resigned as a consul at Iran's Embassy in Oslo in protest against human rights violations in Iran.
