BERLIN, December 17 (RIA Novosti) - Almost 1,500 parrots have been discovered in a two-room apartment owned by a German pensioner in Berlin, the local veterinary service said on Wednesday.
"There were no cages and the birds were flying around the whole apartment and the furniture was covered in feathers, food and droppings," a spokeswoman said, adding that the birds were removed to animal shelters on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The parrot owner now faces charges of having violated a German law on protecting animals as many of the birds were infested with parasites, she said.
The head of Berlin's animal protection society said such cases were becoming more common, noting that in the past week alone 160 animals had been taken away from their owners.
