KALININGRAD, December 8 (RIA Novosti) - Authorities in Russia's Kaliningrad Region have chosen a company to remove and process garbage in the Baltic exclave using advanced technology, a regional government spokesman said on Monday.

The tender, announced in early 2008, was won by local firm Stroikomplekt, which proposed using plasma arc gasification technology to turn the garbage into usable byproducts without burning it.

"The company will be in charge of collecting, removing and processing solid domestic waste throughout the region," the spokesman said.

The authorities expect a processing plant, which could process 2,000 tons of garbage daily, to be built in the region within three or four years at an estimated cost of $250 million.

Experts say between 17 million and 35 million tons of garbage, mostly domestic waste, has accumulated in the Kaliningrad Region.
