TBILISI, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, an Austrian-German joint venture, said Tuesday it would resume repairs to the Inguri hydroelectric power plant on the border between Georgia and its breakaway republic of Abkhazia, now that Georgia had met demands to implement extra security measures to protect personnel.

Inguri Deputy CEO Nugzar Sartania said the Voith Siemens team would return to the plant early next week. "The Georgian government has provided an armored car especially for company officials, in which they will be transported while working in the conflict zone in Abkhazia," he said.

Company officials demanded additional security last week following reports that a criminal group had gunned down an Inguri employee in Abkhazia's Gali District early in January. Two months earlier, another gang attacked a car with Siemens officials on their way to Inguri and shot dead the plant's chief security officer.

Voith Siemens Hydro is working to get the Inguri plant up and running again after it partially went out of service in the mid-1990s. The 5-million euro project is funded by the European Commission, the European Union's chief executive body.
